L-R: Funke Opeke, CEO, MainOne and panel Chair; Artur Mendes, CCO, Angola Cables; Uche Ofodile, Regional Head, Africa Express Wi-Fi, Facebook; Chris George, Strategic Initiatives, Google; Nic Rudnick, CEO, Liquid Telecoms and Chris Wood, CEO, WIOCC, during the MainOne-hosted Africa Session themed “Achieving A Connected Continent: Leading The Data Explosion Across Africa” at the 2017 International Telecoms Week, held in Chicago last week.

Experts at the International Telecoms Week conference in Chicago have highlighted the need to accelerate investment in Africa to facilitate the continent’s broadband data explosion.

Based on the theme “Achieving A Connected Continent: Leading The Data Explosion Across Africa”, the expertpanel session with participation from Google, Facebook, WIOCC, Liquid Telecom and Angola Cables discussed strategies for achieving improved broadband access across the continent. The session reviewed the state of broadband infrastructure and data traffic trajectories in different countries on the continent and made comparisons to other markets globally. This included areas in which investments had been made such as submarine cables, data centers, and access networks including 3G4G and FTTH networks as some of the elements that have accelerated the growth in data traffic on the continent. The consensus was that the data explosion will need to be driven by further investment in local networks to reach more end users rather than new submarine cables. The session revealed that while most African submarine cable systems had the capability to deliver 100 GBPS wavelengths, Africa has not utilized near enough capacity to saturate those systems. According to the panelists, for broadband to become more pervasive, there is need for continued investment and innovative business models to aid the rapid deployment of Access networks across the continent.

Facebook’s Regional Head, Africa for Express Wifi, UcheOfodile shared the company’s experiences working with carriers to jointly make infrastructure investments and highlighted its initiatives in Uganda, where it is working with Airtel to deploy fiber backhaul, but noted that demand and favorable regulatory environments informed their decisions to invest. The need to go beyond mobile infrastructure was also highlighted by the CEO of Liquid Telecom, Nic Rudnick, whose company just completed its acquisition of South African operator, Neotel for $429million. “As consumers in Africa start to use the internet for content, TV and on-demand services, mobile will have its limitations, not just in terms of technology, but also in price. We need to look at other technologies to achieve cost effectiveness”.

The panelists’ assessment of data center growth in Africa also indicated that uptake is not as rapid as experienced in other parts of the world and that most of the content consumed in Africa is hosted in Europe. Data center operators, MainOne and Liquid shared their experience that initial demand on the continent has been driven by Enterprises and financial institutions as against other geographies where OTT players are the biggest data center players. “We do not see any of these OTTs hosting their services from Africa. We are not seeing meaningful investments coming into Africa (from OTT players) and with the sizeable population of the continent, we need to see them play a larger role in the African ecosystem”, the panel concluded.

For the sixth year in a row, MainOne raised Africa’s profile as a target for broadband investment at the recently concluded global telecoms conference, International Telecoms Week in Chicago, USA, where it hosted an over-subscribed Africa Panel Session. The session which was a gathering of major international and African carriers, data center operators, mobile network operators and content distribution companies, provided a platform for players to share perspectives on the opportunities and challenges across the region with a global audience. The discussions also focused on infrastructure challenges as well as regulatory and economic constraints that impede faster proliferation of broadband access across the continent.

Additional notes for Editors:

About Nigeria Innovation Summit: (

The present economic challenges Nigeria is facing is one that calls for urgent attention. Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world that are rich in human and natural resources that would have made the country rank among leading economies around the world lack of vision and innovation has limited our possibilities as a country.

Looking at the 2016 Global Innovation Index that rates countries based on their investment in research and development, Infrastructure, ICTs, Political environment, regulatory effectiveness, knowledge and technology output, market sophistication etc. Nigeria is ranked 114 out of 128 countries. Under this study, Switzerland is rated the most innovative country in the world. Among African countries, the following countries are considered more innovative than Nigeria: Mauritius, South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Uganda, Ghana, Senegal, Egypt, Cote d’ivoire, Ethiopia, Madagascar and Mali. This is largely to the fact that Nigeria does not invest in innovation, research and development.

As an organization we have decided to contribute in creating awareness on the need for Nigeria to really embrace and invest in innovation at different levels and across different sectors of the economy. Innovation will create more jobs, it will help attract investments into the country, and therefore increase our economic growth. Innovation is facilitated by the government in collaboration with the private sector and the academics, each playing their key role to build the ecosystem. It’s time for us to explore opportunities around emerging technologies and trends, Research and Development, Commercialization, Entrepreneurship and Investments as the key drivers of an innovation.

The Nigeria Innovation Summit has become the leading annual event in Nigeria that focuses on the need for the country, businesses, organisations, entrepreneurs in Nigeria to become more innovative and apply innovation to drive sustainable development as we work together to bridge the digital divide.

This is an initiative led by Emerging Media and Advertising Services, New York and Emerging Media Nigeria. We partner with the world’s leading innovation providers from academia, government and industry to connect Nigerian businesses and innovators to global innovation ecosystems.

The Nigeria Innovation Awards is another feature of the Summit, which recognize and promote companies, organisations, institutions, innovators that have embraced innovation across different sectors of Nigeria economy.

We are also going beyond just hosting this Summit, and are working with innovation ecosystems around the world to support Nigerian Innovators through our academy – The African Innovation Academy ( and the building of the Open Innovation Nigeria platform in collaboration with our partners which will encourage corporate, small business and start up innovation. We are open to collaborations with the government, corporate organizations, international organizations and the academic community to see that we change this narrative about Nigeria and also build a sustainable economy for the country through promoting and supporting innovation.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has given assurances that the Federal Government and its agencies would work with Nigerian public relations consultants in the execution of its communication projects.

Receiving a delegation of the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN) on an advocacy visit to his office in Abuja, the Minister said that he understood the importance of Public Relations consultancy having been a Public Relations professional all his professional life.

Mohammed said, “As for your request that government should involve your members in planning and executing PR campaigns, you are preaching to the converted. Discussions are ongoing on the need to patronise Nigerian PR consultants when planning government campaigns. So rest assured on that.”

The Minister added that the Federal Government would not but do the right thing. “The foreign consultants got to where they are today because they were given opportunities. We will ensure that PRCAN agencies are given the first right of refusal on any campaign by Ministries, Department and Agencies.”

The Minister also appealed to PRCAN member-firms’ sense of volunteerism at the moment as there were still some process hurdles to be crossed, just as he expressed the hope for a robust long-term relationship with PRCAN. He pleaded with the association to ensure the relationship between both parties did not end with the visit.

Earlier, PRCAN President, John Ehiguese had expressed the readiness of its member-firms to assist the Federal Government of Nigeria with its numerous policy communication programmes and campaigns.

Ehiguese explained that the primary objective of the visit was to seek how the PRCAN member-firms could contribute their quota to the success of the numerous policy communications programmes and campaigns of the Federal Government.
His words: “There is no doubt that our country is beset by several challenges. But I’m sure you will agree with me that a large chunk of these challenges can be effectively tackled if there is proper and effective communication. That reality alone underscores the importance and centrality of your cabinet portfolio as Honourable Minister of Information and Culture.”

The PRCAN President assured the Minister that the association has opted to offer its hands of solidarity and support to the Minister in helping to craft and execute communications campaign to support government policies and programmes.

He requested that that henceforth Nigerian PR firms should be seriously considered for communication assignments and be given the opportunity to make inputs at the conception stage of such programmes.

Ehiguese explained that, “asides the patriotic imperative, we do indeed possess the relevant competences, both as individual consultancy firms and as a collective, to provide strategic communication support for government’s programmes. Many of our members are already working for global Fortune 500 companies and successfully executing their briefs. In addition some of our members belong to global PR networks, and therefore have direct access to the competences, resources and tools domiciled in such networks.”

He further assured the Minister that it was the patriotic duty of PRCAN member-firms to make those resources available for the use and benefit of Nigeria, being our country. He however assured the Minister that even where the competences appear absent or in short supply, PRCAN member-firms would be willing to outsource or go into collaboration with external third
parties in order to deliver, saying, “at the end of the day, what is important is that Nigerian PR professionals should begin to take the lead in executing Nigerian projects.”

“That is how we will grow, garner the necessary skills and experience, as well as create jobs for our people. I should like to mention that this is consistent with widely applauded, 'Buy Nigeria' posture of the current government,” Ehiguese added.

The PRCAN President also appealed to the Minister to help convey the promise to other Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government so they could tap into the reservoir of professional help that are available in Nigeria to support their communication programmes.

Also in the PRCAN delegation were the Vice President, Muyiwa Akintunde; Secretary General, Adetola Odusote; Publicity Secretary, Israel Jaiye Opayemi; and the immediate past President, Chido Nwakanma.

PRCAN’s primary objective is to promote professional reputation management in Nigeria across both the public and private sectors. It is also committed to maintaining professional standards and discipline among members and providing facilities and professional capacity for the public and private sectors to meet their PR consultancy needs.

PRCAN is the consulting arm of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) established by the NIPR bye-law No. 3 of 1993. Membership is exclusively restricted to consulting firms whose key executives are members of NIPR and registered to practice public relations in Nigeria.
